Scarlet – The Miracle Facelift – Fact or Fiction?
When we hear about a face-lift procedure it often means having surgery to lift sagging or folds of the face that occur around the cheeks and jawlines. The tissues below are pulled back, and the tissues underneath are surgically altered to return the contour of the face to a more youthful appearance. Excess skin is removed and sutured closed.
In recent times, minimally invasive skin procedures have also become popular because surgical facelifts do not improve fine lines, wrinkles and scars in the skin or improve the appearance of sun-damage.
What Is Scarlet RF?
Radiofrequency (RF) micro-needling is a non-surgical skin rejuvenation procedure used to tighten the skin, improve acne scars and reduce pore size. It is a combination of radiofrequency and micro-needling.
Radiofrequency is a term used to describe the type of energy generated by electric currents where the frequency is similar to radio waves. The use of this type of energy dates back over 75 years when it was used in medicine for cauterizing blood vessels, tightening tissues in sleep apnea, destroying tumors and improve irregular heart rhythms.
In 2002, the first RF device was approved for cosmetic use. Since then, there have been developments in monopolar and bipolar RF devices. The monopolar device produces energy that flows from the operator’s handpiece to a grounding device placed distally on the person’s body. The bipolar RF produces energy that flows between two electrodes contained within the operator’s handpiece.
How Can Scarlet Benefit Me?
Micro-needling with RF works by generating an electrothermal reaction in the skin. Electric currents are absorbed by water, vessels and collagen fibers which coagulates to stimulate the production of cytokines and growth factors which are important for tissue regeneration. The combination of these two procedures into a single device allows more precise control of depth to facilitate safer treatment with minimal down-time.
Conditions such as facial wrinkles, inflammatory acne, and scars have been successfully treated. The needles are disposable, sterile and single-use. Compared to conventional RF devices where the epidermis must be protected; fractionated bipolar RF micro-needling preserves the epidermis. Needles can vary from 0.5mm to 3.5mm deep and the depth can be adjusted depending upon the area that is being treated.
Problems such as forehead wrinkles, droopy eyes, acne scars, uneven skin tone and stretch marks can be addressed by this procedure.
Several treatment sessions one month apart are needed for the tightening effects to appear as it takes time for the skin to rebuild. This can take up to 6 months for optimal results.
The Safety Part
The procedure does require a topical anesthetic and there is some redness and irritation that can last for a few hours and up to a day. It is important to avoid sun exposure after the treatment and to use sunscreen. Some complications such as bleeding, bruising, infection, and skin peeling can occur which will require immediate medical attention. It is not suitable in pregnant or lactating women, people with autoimmune conditions, metal implants, defibrillators, pacemakers, cancer, or skin diseases.
A consultation with a qualified professional is needed to assess if this is a safe and suitable treatment for you.
